What I wanted to talk about today was the importance of eating healthy. As everyone is aware, obesity is a huge issue particularly in the United States. I think a big problem is the fact that healthy food in the United States costs so much yet McDonalds and other fast food places offer quick and cheap meals most low and middle-class families can afford. Unfortunately, this epidemic is affecting not only adults but also our future children. Children are affected because they are not getting the proper nutrients needed to be strong mentally and physically. Of course other factors affect the development of children's mental well being such as a safe home to live in, enough food, stability and so on, but healthy food is definitely up there on the scale. Let me give you an example...a few years ago I went to visit a friend in Florida and told her that I would buy some groceries for us since she was so kind to let me stay at her house without paying. I went to the grocery store and was amazed at how expensive apples and bananas were. The same apples that I buy for .77 cents per kg here in Canada cost triple in Florida! Next, I moved onto the vegetables and was shocked at how expensive peppers and broccoli were! I thought for sure there must be some kind of mistake! My friend reassured me that no, this is not a mistake, fruits and veggies are extremely expensive and these weren't even organic! Then I remembered when my parents and I were on a road trip a few months prior to going to Florida, we were in Buffalo and stopped at Burger King to grab a burger. That burger was the biggest burger I had ever seen, actually the whole meal was the biggest fast food meal and it was only something ridiculous like $3.99!!!! Now tell me, how can anyone making minimum wage support a hungry family with kids when the healthy food is triple the price of fast food? I guess what I am trying to say is that it is unfortunate for many people that they really don't have much of a choice but to keep eating fast food. I will say that we are blessed and very lucky to live in Ontario where we can go to farms and get fresh fruits and veggies. Also, our food prices are not that expensive especially for fruits and vegetables when you compare them to the US. Luckily for us Canadians, most people are able to buy at least apples or bananas and have a little bit of healthiness in the foods they eat. You don't have to break your wallet and spend tons of money on groceries, you can do that and save! I believe that healthy eating starts at home and it doesn't take much. My goal through this blog is to get people to take a few minutes per day to cook up healthy meals which will actually save money and provide nutrition to the whole family. My next blog will feature a healthy diet plan that worked for me and my family and it will save you money! Until next time, Desi :)
